That Time in South Padre….

by Kate P. on 04/06/2011

I was 19 years old and a freshman in college. I was your dream child. I went to a small, private liberal arts school and made a 3.75 every semester. I didn’t drink. I didn’t smoke. I didn’t sleep around. I was the kid that when my parents sent me off to school they didn’t have to worry one bit, because they knew I’d stay out of trouble.

I loved being that girl too. It did not bother me at all. But sometimes it got kind of boring. I wanted to do something that was unexpected. Something that helped me break free of that “good” girl status, but something that did make me a wild ho’ bag either.

My freshman year I went on Spring Break to South Padre Island. Hello Sodom & Gomorrah! That place was insane. A friend & I had just stepped into the elevator 5 minutes after checking in & we had a video camera thrown in our faces showing a guy doing something to a girl I’d never even wanted to hear about, let alone see on camera.

But, it was a fun trip. I went to the beach. I danced [sober] at the clubs. I saw Vanilla Ice (Ice Ice Baby) live (poor guy, he’ll never escape that song.)

Somehow getting our belly buttons pierced came up & I talked my friend Kari into going with me. I’d been wanting it done for awhile, my mother told me she never thought I’d do it (whoops! Big mistake on that one mom) & so I went down to a tattoo parlor & signed up.

Kari made me go first. I didn’t really hurt but she almost passed out when she saw it happen. The tatted up guy was super nice, Kari had her turn, he gave us some soap to clean it, & sent us on our merry way.

AND I LOVED IT! I wore it for 6 years & when I was pregnant I took it out (my grandparents were so happy.) I even have three special rings I bought when I was in Spain, one from Mexico & one from my honeymoon in Hawaii.

I actually miss it. But since I’m still in the “I want more kids” phase it seems pointless to have it done again.

Maybe someday I’ll really break out of that box & get a tattoo? (just joking Grandma, sort of.)

A 1980s Themed Party-this pic doesn't really help prove the "good girl" status does it? ;)

Have a piercing(s) or tattoo(s)? Where & what is it?

2.) A rule I broke.

I was/is a good girl, too. And I think it’s hilarious that this is your “bad girl” story — mine is no worse! How boring are we…? No tats for me. Though I did get a piercing in a somewhat similar way for a somewhat similar reason — I was studying abroad in Europe in college and got talked into getting one of those cartilage piercings. In a train station! In Europe! Best decision ever, right?

Even good girls gotta mix it up every now and then. I haven’t been tempted to do the belly button. I do have a tattoo and a nose ring though.
I love the nose ring!! (The tattoo is on my back and it has been so long since I have seen I only vaguely remember what it is.)

My story is eerily similiar to yours. College with girlfriends = belly button ring. First pregnancy = no belly button ring!

I had actually forgotten my story, thanks for bringing back a good memory!

You had a belly button piercing?? And if you’ve been to South Padre you need to head North and visit me! :)

I always chickened out on getting my belly button pierced, but have gone back and forth on the idea of a tattoo and a nose ring [a teeny tiny one]. And you and I were one in the same in high school….perfect 4.0 GPA, no drinking, no smoking. And you’re right….it got a little boring at times. :) Cute post!

I was the same exact way in school. I never did anything wrong. I was too afraid to get in trouble, haha!

I do have 4 tattoos though. A heart on my shoulder, a rose on my hip (back), a flowery thing on my hip (front) and a butterfly on my foot. Even though I have 4, I surprise every single person when they find out I have them. Apparently I don’t look like the tattoo-type?!?

Ha! I used to have a belly button ring too and my tongue pierced. I left my belly button ring in while I was pregnant the first time but the second time I took it out.

Great story!!! I was a good 4.0 kinda gal in high school, too. Well, I did have a slight problem that involved toilet paper & eggs…I never got caught, so it doesn’t count. Right?

Only my ears are pierced & no tattoos for me.

Well, I was a good girl in high school, which is why I got away with so much in college. I was not a good girl in college and I don’t think my best story is something you want on your site ;o)

But, I did recently get my nose pierced, like REALLY recently, at 34 years old. Story’s on my blog if anyone is interested. ;o)

Hahaha! I was also a “good girl,” but got an extra piercing in my ear during my freshman year of college. It made me feel so rebellious! ;)

Anyway, just stopping by from SITS and wanted to say hi!

I’d love to get mine pierced, but I want to wait until I lose all the weight I need to. Looked FABULOUS on you :)

If you wore if for 6 years sounds like you made the right decision. Sometimes being the good girl takes it’s toll and a belly button ring isn’t hurting anyone (except for the initial pierce).

I was the same way in college, minus the drinking. I did drink, but responsibly. All the girls on my floor jokingly called me Mother Theresa because I was the good girl of the group, the one who stopped drinking before I couldn’t think logically and I also would rangle up my friends before they were scooped up by some dirtbag trying to take them home. I did get a tattoo the summer betweeen my sophomore and junior year, just a small little ladybug on the inside of my leg just above my ankle. My mom loved it, my father shit a brick!! Ha ha ha good times!

I was also that good girl growing up. And really probably still am. But I did shock my parents when at 29 I got a tattoo. I had wanted one since I was 5, but knew they did not approve. Now I want more. So addictive.

I was a rule follower in high school. College on the other hand–that’s where I learned that breaking a few rules was not the end of the world. Fun times.

I’ve had my tongue pierced since I turned 30. 13 years ago next week. Funny thing is is that I pierced it as something ‘not permanent’ since my Dad freaked so bad at my 2nd tattoo. I’ve got a ring of lilies around my left ankle & a big ole ‘tramp stamp’ that I still don’t regret. Heck, In my 20′s, no one had tramp stamps. I had my bb pierced but removed it when I gained a bunch of weight & it hurt when I sat down. I’d do it again if I actually got back in shape.

I may have broken a few rules, but needles would stop me cold;)

My “big rebellion” piercing-wise was when I was 22 and married. I got a second hole in each ear. And almost passed out :-p

I don’t remember what semester I taught you at UA, but I had a big ‘ol purple streak in my hair in the fall. I had to get my wisdom teeth out a week before grad school started and dyed a strip of my hair purple while still under the influence. Since my hair is really dark, I had to bleach it first and then put the temporary fun color on. Great decision making there :-p It took almost 2 years to grow out the bleached part. I totally loved having the pink hair though. I only stopped re-applying the pink dye because I got a job where it was not appropriate…

Also, I will totally get a tattoo when it’s time to have a midlife crisis.

I was the opposite of you. Total wild child. Drinking, drugs, bad grades, sex.. It all started in high school and cotinued through part of college. I always wanted to get my belly pierced but i was 17 and the contingency was quitting smoking. Somehow i got my folks to agree to my first tst at 17 though (using my friend’s id) and then i did the second behind their back shortly after (which totally backfired as it would be the one i removed years later). Then i went away to school and got my tongue
pierced. I was in my early 20′s and out on the town with friends in nyc and kind of/sort of as a dare got my nipple (gasp!) pierced. I wound up liking it though, especially as i went topless on beaches throughout spain, but now as a breastfeeding mom i look down at my nipple, marveling at its “real” use, and shake my head at how stupid i was. Wait though, that’s not it. When i was 23 i went and got my third tattoo with my dad! Of all people as he was vehemently against ny first one and beligerently pissed about my second. I’ll never forget the guy who inkef me on my lower back wiping sweat off his forehead, i was like are you ok? He told me “i’ve tattooed boyfriend and girlfriend, mother and son, but never a father and daughter. Is he cool” he asked gesturing towards my dad. I was like yea dude, so cool.

This inspired me to write my own post – i mean i practically already did!

I have two holes pierced in both ears and the cartilage in my left ear. I want to get my belly button pierced as a reward for when I lose all my weight. Well, that never got done! haha As for a tattoo…I was just thinking about that again yesterday…hmmm….

I was not a good girl, but I never got a tattoo. I broke enough other rules. Phew. So lucky to have made it out alive. :-)

I wasn’t a good girl or a bad girl, although lots of people might have labelled me as one or the other. My husband and I got our first tattoos together when we were dating. It is an angel that he designed. Mine is small and just inside my hip-bone, so I can cover it even if I’m in a bathing suit, depending on the cut of the suit.
