The Night Todd Proposed

12/01/2010 by Kate P. 5 Comments

Todd proposed on December 19, 2006. It was my 23rd birthday.

I knew a proposal was coming and I knew that he had been carrying the ring around in his pocket for a few days. Heck, I had even booked the church 5 days before he ever proposed (there were only 3 dates left for 3 years at this church and I had always wanted to be married there. So, I went for it. ::insert sheepish grin & shrug here::) But, I had no stinking idea when he was actually going to propose.

We went out to eat that night to “celebrate” my birthday. Thank God he didn’t propose right there in front of everyone at the restaurant, I would have DIED! Then we went to the square to look at all the Christmas lights. We made it one lap around and finally Todd said that he wanted to give me my birthday present.

So, there I am all giddy that I’m about to get my greedy little hands on a diamond my once in a lifetime proposal and instead he hands me a card. I read through the card real fast thinking that maybe the proposal was in the card. It wasn’t. Then he pulled a pink rose out of the inside pocket of his jacket and said that he wanted to give me a birthday rose.

I honestly was thinking, “Aw, this rose is so pretty. But seriously, when he is going to propose?!” I’m staring at the rose in his hand and he gets down on one knee and as he goes down I can see inside the rose and there was my engagement ring and then came the “Kate, will you marry me?” It was perfect and totally worth the wait (apparently he has spent days trying to figure out how he was going to ask. He even read a book on proposal ideas. lol His proposal idea did not come out of that book, he came up with it on his own. Gosh, excuse me while I gush about how perfect he is. 🙂

I don’t think I said yes. Even though I had been expecting it, I was still terrified and could not find the courage to speak. Then he asked me if I was happy and if I would please tell him yes or no (the look on my face must have had him worried.) Instead of telling him something along the lines of “Yes, yes, a thousand times yes,”I busted out with, “I think I’m gonna throw up.” Yeah, I know. I’m all class.

Then we spent the next several hours calling and texting every.single.person in our phones. The response we got from most people was, “ENGAGED?!!! Didn’t you JUST start dating?!” I always knew that I would marry someone that I hadn’t dated for very long. It’s just how I roll. We met on May 24, 2006, were dating by September, engaged in December, and married in June of ’07 (a cool tidbit about May 24th: We met on May 24, 2006, applied for our marriage license May 24, 2007, and Lboy was born May 24, 2009. There’s just something in the cosmos about that day for us.)

Anyways, when I realized that today is the first day of December, I was amazed that it was going to be the 4th Anniversary of us getting engaged! I can’t believe it’s already been that long. I guess time flies when you’re having fun!

How did your proposal go? If you aren’t engaged/married do you have a dream proposal in mind?

Congrats on the anniversary of your engagement! And that must mean that Happy Birthday is soon in order, too! 🙂 And how cool about May 24! (And that's a gorgeous ring, too!)

I laugh, thinking about getting engaged to my hubby. He wanted me to pick out my ring, and I was fine with that. My only stipulation was that he had to figure out how to give it to me. We bought the ring in October, and I knew it was in a drawer in the bedroom. Occasionally I would even go in and try it on when he wasn't home! 🙂 He would drop little hints from time to time, like, "Do you think you'd like a really special gift soon?" Hahahaha!!! I more or less had to direct the poor man to do it on New Year's Eve, on the beach. For all that wasn't a surprise, he still got all emotional when he asked me to marry him, and so did I. And one of the coolest things was that, unbeknownst to us, there was a group of people standing on a hotel balcony, watching the sunset. They saw him get down on one knee, and when we hugged, they all started cheering. 🙂

That's so cool! What a neat ending!

Todd had actually picked out a different ring but wanted me to go look at stuff before he bought it. Thanks be to God that he asked me to look at stuff because I actually pointed at the ring he had chosen not knowing that was the ring and told him that it was the ugliest ring known to mankind. Hahaha! But when I did try on the ring I have now my hand was shaking was so hard I couldn't get it to stop and he just laughed at me. But I was super super nervous!

I picked 3 rings and let him choose from there. But this one was my favorite and he knew that. I'm glad he let me pick the rings out because the one he had picked out was one that I had told him was hideous! Of course I told him this without even knowing he was looking at rings and knowing that he had chosen that one–it was really funny!

That's so cool y'all told the family together!
