Our Wedding Song

11/16/2010 by Kate P. 9 Comments

One day during the wedding planning process, one of my closest friends called me and told me she had found the PERFECT wedding song for Todd & me to dance to at our reception. I listened to it one time, decided she was right, and then waited for Todd to get off work so I could play it for him. He loved it as well. She was right, it was the perfect song.

The song is titled, When did you fall?, and fit us so beautifully because we had both been completely delusional about how we felt for each other. In all sincerity, we truly believed ourselves to be really great friends. One day my friend, Jenny, and I were sitting somewhere on our college campus and I said to her, “Jenny, I have a confession. I think I like Todd.” The only response I got from her was, “DUH! Everyone knows that.”

Finally, Todd & I started dating (though I never allowed us to call it dating, we were “JUST FRIENDS” until we got engaged.) And once we were together (whether you call it dating or friendship or both) we went over and over our stories and all the different times that it was clear to everyone else we were crazy about each other but we didn’t know it.
And to put icing on the cake most of the situations the singer sings about in the song actually did take place for Todd and me. It was as though the song was written specifically for us.  He even sings about making up for lost time. Todd I were “just friends” aka dated three months then were engaged and married 6 months later.

We had a beautiful, BIG, Cathedral wedding with 450 people and an AMAZING band with an even more AMAZING singer who sang the song with perfection!
The lyrics are listed below. No obligation to read them, just put them there for fun!
What was your wedding song? Why did you choose it? If you aren’t married yet, do you have a dream wedding song you would like to dance to?

When Did You Fall?
by Chris Rice
You’re all smiles and silly conversation
As if this sunny day came just for you
You twist your hair, you smile, and you turn your eyes away
C’mon, tell me what’s right with you
Now it dawns on me probably everybody’s talkin’
And there’s something here I’m supposed to realize
‘Cause your secret’s out, and the universe laughs at its joke on me
I just caught it in your eyes, it’s a beautiful surprise

When did you fall in love with me?
Was it out of the blue
‘Cause I swear I never knew it
When did you let your heart run free?
Have you been waiting long?
When did you fall in love with me?
When did you fall in love?

Make your way over here, sit down by this fool, and let’s rewind
C’mon, let’s go back and replay all our scenes
You can point out the hints, the clues, the twists and the smiles this time
All the ones that slipped by me
I bet my face is red, and you can hear my heart poundin’
Well I guess it don’t matter now that I realize
‘Cause baby I missed it then, but I can surely see you now
Right here before my eyes
You’re my beautiful surprise

When did you fall in love with me?
Was it out of the blue
‘Cause I swear I never knew it
When did you let your heart run free?
Have you been waiting long?
When did you fall in love with me?
When did you fall in love?

Was it at the coffee shop
Or that morning at the bus stop
When you almost slipped, and I caught your hand
Or the time we built the snowman
The day at the beach, sandy and warm
Or the night with the scary thunderstorm
I never saw the signs
Now we’ve got to make up for lost time
And I can tell now by the way that you’re looking at me
I’d better finish this song so my lips will be free

Have you been waiting long, when did you fall in love
I kept you waiting so long, when did you fall
Have you been waiting long
When did you fall in love with me
When did you fall in love?

Love it! Our wedding song was going to be Love Story song at the end of Princess Bride, until we got the CD and realized how SLOW it was, and it is an incredibly LONG song. So I went to itunes and hunted through some of our favorite artists, looked up songs that we had talked about before, even almost stole a friends song {hehe} then Better Together by Jack Johnson came on my ipod. Perfect, I have no idea why I hadn't thought of it before, I guess because it wasn't "traditional" wedding material. But, it was great, and I'm honestly glad we picked it last minute. It's a fun story… just like our random engagement.

Too sweet! I love those wedding pictures so much! And that song IS amazing. I think it's great that you guys were 'just friends' for so long before you really had a clue. You got to know each other for 'real' not in that phony -this is what I want him/her to see me as – knowing thing. Perfection!

Oh! And our wedding song was True Companion by Marc Cohn. Which was also a friends of mine's song, who got married the same day, but 600 miles away. AND the song of a wedding we went to 2 weeks before ours. So I guess 2001 was a big year for this one!

I love the Princess Bride and you're right the last song is pretty awesome! I love the Jack Johnson song too–you had a random engagement? Do share!

We were definitely delusional, but we honestly believe that God designed it that way. Because had we jumped right in it would have been really messy seeing as how we were both dating other people when we met.

Definitely a popular song-it's cool that you could share it with friends!

When our friends were all getting married I remember all the father-daughter dances were the same country song that is super sweet. But my dad & I danced to "What a wonderful world by louis armstrong. And Todd & his mother danced to "Somewhere over the rainbow."

We never danced. It wasn't that kind of reception and it's one thing I wish we'd found a way to work in!

Love those pictures – you guys look so blissful!

Everyone in my fam got married at a courthouse, so this was one of the 4 weddings that my family actually had that involved a reception. Let alone dancing!

Thanks! We had a lot of fun that day!

we were just really good 😉 Who had time for practicing when we were doing things like working two jobs, backstage manager of the play Josh was in, writing my thesis? And that was just me. Josh was working three jobs, taking 18 credits, in the play. Seriously, the months leading up to our wedding were insane.
