The other day while I was doing chores & Lboy was playing in his toy bucket (quickly destroying all the hard work I was doing while cleaning) I had the tv on for some background noise. I was watching something on E! and the movie, Knocked Up, came on and I was listening to it. I haven’t seen it since it came out in the theaters so I had forgotten the hilarious, dramatic scene where Katherine Heigl’s character goes to the store with her sister & buys a million pregnancy tests and then proceeds to take them all.
It reminded me of the day that I found out I was pregnant. I had driven down to my parents’ to be with my grandmother while she went in for an MRI. I had been feeling terrible for weeks, “knew” I was pregnant but had pushed it to the back of my mind and kept telling myself there was no way I was. That was just my mind playing tricks on me obviously. Ha!
I got up the morning of the MRI and my mom asked if I was hungry for breakfast. I distinctly remember making a face like the thought of food makes me want to vomit and she handed me peanut butter crackers & said, “Go take a pregnancy test.” I laughed her, told her she was crazy, & silently flipped out.
I was still complaining about feeling terrible by the time I got to the hospital, but I didn’t want to say too much because my grandparents were in the car. Grandma & Grandpa went to the check-in station and my mom SHOVED me in the direction of the pharmacy and said that I HAD to go buy a pregnancy test.
So there I am, in the bathroom, urinating on that darn stick, getting my watch ready to time how long it needed to take to give me the results and I see this circle with the positive plus sign show up within 15 seconds. Not the 3 minutes the box said it would take, 15 seconds people! I seriously went cross eyed and thought there was a mistake. I threw the test away, went back out to the waiting room, & Mama looks at me and knows instantly what the test said without me even saying a word to her. She pulled me back into the bathroom, locked the door, dug the test out of the trash, and started jumping up & down. (Telling Todd was a different story and you can read about that HERE.)
I drop my grandparents off at their house after we were all finished up at the hospital and then I go directly to a drug store & proceed to spend $75 on pregnancy tests. And I took 6 of them, then I made my mom take one so that I knew for sure that the sticks weren’t defective, and then for three straight days, I proceeded to take a pregnancy test every morning.
So, the next time you watch the movie, Knocked Up, don’t think that those women were going crazy when they took all those tests. Because let me tell you, women in shock will do anything!
How did you find out you were pregnant?
