"Things I Learned" Thursday

04/01/2010 by Kate P. 13 Comments

Remeber this post about me deciding that I’m going to actually become serious about blogging? Well, it’s been 10 days since I wrote that & I thought that I would share all the things I’ve learned. And here’s a list!

1. There’s a blogging group out there for everyone- whether it’s about Horror Films like Hayes Hudson’s House of Horror, people struggling with illnesses, like Kerri @ Living with Chronic Illness (who in fact has the exact same illness as my MIL, so I was immediately drawn to this blog), or Awesome Mommies like us!

2. If you find a blog post inspires you enough to leave a comment-do it! You might make a friend or two or three or more like I did with (just to name a few, there are literally a ton that I’ve been talking to) Cowboy Boots & Baby Booties & The Makeshift Revolution (who I will be writing for in the next couple of weeks! yay)

3. Don’t be intimidated by bloggers who have been blogging longer than you–they more than likely started from scratch too & usually help a girl out like: Theta Mom & Alabaster Cow.

4. Have fun being creative with your posts like Candace Creations did with her McLinky Party titled Mommy Moments at Candace Creations.

5. If you want to build a following put your name out there & don’t be afraid to do it. The places I have found the most encouragement are: Theta Mom Community, Top Mommy Blogs, Lady Blogger’s Society, Mom Blogger’s Club, & The Secret is in the Sauce.

6. Some people will make you pee your pants laughing! melodramommy, Mama Still Wears Gucci & Alabaster Cow.

7. If you venture outside of your “niche” you’re likey to find even more cool peeps like I did during the Lady Blogger Tea Party Social.

8. You find awesome people to read that you can relate to & when you feel like no else understands, boom, there’s a blog about that. Or when you want to see something inspiring, stumble onto an awesome blog with beautiful pictures. Andie Rae Photography, The Exposed Mom & Enjoying the Small Things.

9. Be yourself! Even in the e-world people can detect when you aren’t being you. And you will be happier with your results!

10. Have an organized layout! When I changed my template I got a ton of compliments & more readers (considering I had 4 readers, all of who I was related to about 10 days ago….the layout was definitely an improvement!)

11. There are some people who make blog designs that are amazing enough to inspire you to be a blogger! That’s exactly what happened with April Showers.

12. Always be nice to Ericka at Alabaster Cow because she knows where I live in the real world she’s friggin’ hilarious, can write amazingly well (check out this Post) & she really helped me out with this whole blogging thing! (Why else would I have mentioned her 3 times in this post?! ha)

What things have you learned in the blogosphere?!
Why I need a baby gate to the kitchen! This kid loves, loves, loves the dog food!

…and BOOM there's a blog for that! Isn't that the truth! The single best thing I've done so far in my blog career is setting up my email address in my profile so people can reply directly to my comments. It's a whole higher level of blogging relationships.

I love the photo of your baby in the dog food in the kitchen!! I had so many problems with Lucy getting into the kitchen and emptying out my cabinets that I use the side railing of my baby crib to block off the kitchen! lol!

Aww what a cute baby! I hope he doesn't eat it too. And welcome to the blog world. Trust me, there's a whole lot more learning you can do around these parts. Everyday it's something new 🙂

Joey: I will have to figure that out! Sometimes when I go into the settings area I just feel like I'm reading Mandarin or something. Haha

Hannah: I used to use the pack n' play as a baby gate, but then we got a dining room table (FINALLY) & the pack n'play had to move. Poor Giorgi I'm not sure if he'll ever eat again!

Ericka: Maybe it's a baby thing! Who knows?!

Dorkys: Thank you! Oh, I've dug many dog food pieces out of his mouth-fortunately I'm usually there in time!

Thank you everyone for stopping by, means a lot!

I learned so much from all these great facts and man can I use a few tips. Someday I want to hire a person just to sit and help me with my list of 10 million questions. I have a lot of tech blog issues. But all in all, I think what you write is so much more important than how fancy your button is. Who am I kidding? I haven't even figured out how to make a button!

I'm about as good with computers as I am good at math–which is NOT GOOD! I think you're right, substance is important. I don't return to blogs when all I see are advertisements-I'm looking for people to "meet" not buy stuff from, if that makes any sense. I tried some tutorials on making the button-clearly you see how that worked out, cause I don't have one! lol
