Welcome Whitley-My little sister!

09/10/2010 by Kate P. 15 Comments

I am super excited about introducing you all to my little sister! She is giving us her pros & cons of being a mom, from little cousins trying to get her to watch them go potty off of bridges to having scary teenagers! Please leave her some comment love!
My sisters & me in this order: Kate, Whitley, Maryann. I’m the oldest, Whitley the youngest (of the girls) & Maryann is in the middle. We also have two little brothers.
Hi everyone! I’m Kate’s sister, Whitley. I’ve been married a little over a year now and for some reason everyone asks me “when are you going to have children?” I politely say “o not anytime soon.” But it has led me down the road of thinking about the pros and cons of having children.
(Just for a side note I’ve told myself repeatedly I have to stop reading these mommy blogs. I go from absolutely never wanting children to I want one now because I can’t wait for those special moments only mommies can have.)
Here are my top ten pros and cons for having children.
My Top Ten Pros:

1. LOVE that is unimaginable to me right now.
2. My future children’s laughter.
3. Watching my husband play with our future children. (I love watching him play with Lboy.)
4. Getting to take my children on hiking and canoeing trips.
5. Teaching my children about life.
6. Learning about life from my children.
7. Getting to eat snow cones with my child in my lap while sharing the same spoon. (Lboy and I did this.)
8. Having a little boy so excited about getting to pee off a bridge that he wants me to watch and then proceeds to make designs in the water. (I have experienced this and it’s absolutely hilarious.)
9. Children’s innocence. It is a constant reminder that this world is exciting and magical.
10. The joy my in-laws will get from getting to be first time grandparents and the joy my parents will get from being grandparents again.

My Top Ten Cons:

1. Teenagers (They scare me!)
2. Siblings fighting (seriously I don’t know how parents can stand this)
3. Being financially responsible for another human being other than myself.
4. Loss of freedom getting to go and do whatever I want whenever I please.
5. The anxiety that:
Every corner is a busted head, every light socket is an electric chair, every stair is a steep mountainous climb and a simple tumble will bring serious injury, and every park bench is a cliff in which my children will plunge head first to their death.
6. I dread the thought of potty training.
7. I dread the thought of disciplining my children. (I can’t even discipline my dog without feeling disgustingly guilty.)
8. Listening to and dealing with angry, screaming children.
9. Having stubborn children just like me.
10. Failing to teach my children all the essential skills to be successful in the world.

When it comes to motherhood I always think of the verse from Upward Over the Mountain by Iron and Wine “Mother remember the blink of an eye when I breathed through your body?” I cannot imagine this but it makes me think of my mother-in-law and how her face brightens when my husband is talking to her. She is his biggest fan. I think of my mother who is the happiest when all her children are home, or of my grandmother who laughs till she cries when she tells stories about my father. I think of Kate who believes watching Lboy is more amazing then seeing Paris or Egypt. This verse stirs emotions that I wish I could fathom and someday I will. Obviously the love a parent has for a child is the pro that cancels out all the cons.

Such a fun post! I'm totally with you too, teenagers frighten me too! If I could just bottle GG up at 13 months and keep her this small for a while I definitely would! Happy Friday!

Hi Nice to meet you, and thanks for sharing your post with us. I make a mental list of pros and cons for everything. I have secretly been debating the pros and cons of trying for a second child. It's very early days and no decision has been made yet. I think we need to focus on us first.

So make sure you enjoy you and your husband for a while and then there is no harm in trying is there? 😉

    Good luck
    Take care

She couldn't be more true! That last sentence is why I can't imagine not having babies. What do people do when they are grey and old and had no children, who takes care of them? Thats what would also cancel all the cons out haha, selfish I know!

Such a great picture of your sisters and you, so pretty!!

I'm in the same boat as you! recently married, trying to grasp the concept that in not too long, I might be a mom.

It scares the crap out of me!

Great reflection for the day! Being a parent is the hardest job you will ever love. It is hard, sometimes scary, and the most amazing, wonderful, blessed, joyful, funniest, happiest thing you could do.

My list of cons was WAY longer than that. Eventually my hubby and I decided to take the "see what happens" approach. We had one darling daughter and on the next round of let's "see what happens" we came up empty. So we've got an only daughter and I wouldn't change it for the world. I think that list of cons shrinks pretty quick when you get to experience that first "pro" on your list.

Hey – I have to say I love your name! It sounds so 'southern.' I forget are you guys southern or am I just being prejudicial? :pSeriously, girl, having kids is bittersweet. And there's nothing that can prepare you for the changes that happen.  Your 'con' about teenagers, well, I have 2 boys and while that scares me – having a teenage GIRL would scare me stupid! I was awful, if I had a girl, I'm pretty sure she'd be worse. :p Not gonna lie, the laughter is pretty freakin awesome.

A former colleague at my first job, 10 years ago, told me…"Just write down now how much you think your parents love you. And then look at that piece of paper after you have your own children. You really have no idea how deep is love until you have children of your own."

I have thought about that a million times since the girls were born…it's so true!

    Great post! 🙂

Ok, let's just get this out of the way…you all are beautiful. Seriously, pretty pretty ladies. Alright, feeling better about that being in the open.

Now…great lists there Whitley. Teenagers freak me out too, especially when I think about my overly sassy 3 year old turning into one. TERRIFYING!!

All of your pros and cons are quite good. But, I would say this….figure out the disciplining now, 'cause they NEED it and it doesn't harm them. If you don't, life will SUCK! And secondly, ya just can't live in "fear" of all that "could go" wrong. Kids will fall, they will get hurt, it's just part of learning and growing. And they will be fine. Meh, that's just my 2 cents worth.

You forgot to list another PRO – adding another gorgeous boy/girl into the already good-looking family tree. 😉

Seriously though, great post. You're right too, love takes on a whole new meaning when you have kids. There is nothing like it!

Ooooh whitley, seeing as how i have known you for what, over 10 years now?? something crazy like that, i know you are going to be a GREAT mom. I cannot wait until you have a boy for Emery to run around with!!!

With that being said, YES u suck at disciplining Marley & also, i will stop asking you all the time if you are pregnant 🙂 but seriously…are you pregnant?
