My "Sort of" Velveteen Rabbit-The Princess Bride

12/29/2010 by Kate P. 5 Comments

You know those games when you were a kid that you are too embarrassed to tell anyone about probably because you stayed a kid for a little too long and you would die if your peers had known you still acted like that? You ran around in your backyard and it instantly became a palace courtyard, sticks were scepters, rocks were thrones for kings & queens, and soccer shorts & a tshirt were kingly & queenly dress. Well, I played those games and loved them. Mostly because I always made myself the one in charge and I was always a good guy. My little sister, Maryann, was always the evil queen, and my cousin, Kelley, was always the court jester.

A few years later, when we were all past the point of playing games and we had outgrown the childhood worlds of imagination, Kelley, told me that I should read The Princess Bride since I liked the movie so much. I had no idea it was a book first, so she loaned me her copy. I’m not sure how I ended up with her copy as mine permanently (she could tell you her memory is amazing) but somehow I did and she wrote a note on the inside:

To Kate: A Princess in her own right.
Love, Kelley
Forever more her “Court Jester”
Summer ’98
I couldn’t believe she had remembered those games. I had long forgotten about them (again, her memory is amazing.) The note on the inside made it so special, it captured all of my young childhood in a few lines & I could carry it with me wherever I went.

I fell in love with this book. I’ve read it so many times that it has been taped and re-taped a million times. The cover has come off of it so many times that it looks like a tattered piece of junk.

It was my “friend” when I first went to college. I didn’t have a roommate, I didn’t know a soul on campus, I didn’t have a TV, and I had only brought a couple of books. I would do my best to go out and meet people at school, but when I came back to my dorm room, I always had this book there. As I made new friends, the more it sat on the shelf.
Then I went to Spain. It was an exciting, yet devastatingly lonely trip. But, I had my book with me, I had packed it just in case. I ended up reading it twice in four weeks. I also ended up buying scotch tape on that trip to put the cover back together.
I transferred colleges after the Spain trip. Here I was going to school with 20,000 people when I had been in school with 800, and I only knew one person. I would go to class totally anxious and nervous, afterward I would make myself go hang out with people I had met, and it was so draining adjusting to the change. When those long days were over I would come back to my dorm room, do my homework, and then at night I would read my book. It was comforting to have it there. I eventually made new friends and it ended up back on the shelf.

Then I went to Mexico for another study abroad trip. I knew NO ONE. So, as usual I packed my book in my carry-on expecting to do a lot of reading the first few weeks. I actually never read it while I was there one time. I ended up making some great friends (Hi Jenny! Hi Todd!) and it stayed in my suitcase the whole time.

Today, it’s just habit to pack it whenever I go on a trip. Heck, it’s been a constant traveling companion for 12 years now. It has gone with me to more than 25 states in the US, two foreign countries (twice to Mexico), and countless small trips across the state. I don’t think I’ve read the book in a few years, I’ve been too busy and I definitely haven’t needed it.

But, it sits on my shelf in my bedroom with my other favorite books. This one is the most special, it’s been the most places, it’s been loved & needed the most.

Do you have a “velveteen rabbit”?

I LOVE that book – and I love your story with it! Clearly the two of you are quite close.

I love the movie but have never read the book. I will have to read it, it sounds really special.

I have a similar relationship with the book "Where the Heart is". It was given to me by my best friend in 8th grade and I have read it at least 50 times. I love it so.

I really need to read that book! Obviously I love the movie (who doesn't?)

I have read Pride and Prejudice at least 5 times as an adult, and when I was a kid I read The Hobbit 10 times, I think.

I guess my velveteen rabbit is my teddy bear, Mr. Beeps. He's as old as I am, and he goes with me everywhere.

I am reading it right now for our book club meeting. I've never read it and sadly have also not seen the movie from start to finish. I've caught clips here and there, but that's it. I love it thus far and hope to make it a favorite as well!

My Velveteen Rabbit, however, is a pillow I've had as long as I remember. I still sleep with it. Not under my head though… It is an old, worn out feather pillow with hardly any feathers left. But I wrap my arm around it each and every night and can't sleep without it.
