Hi, are you a mother by any chance?

10/04/2011 by Kate P. 16 Comments

Last week, Todd, Lboy & I loaded up in the car to go get a few things from WalMart.

Todd & Lboy went to the electronic section while I went to grab some pull-ups & other kid stuff.

I’m standing in the diaper aisle & there’s this very put together woman standing there with her shopping cart. She’s in work clothes & I knew immediately she wasn’t a mom. She had this glazed over look in her eyes from all the different selections of diapers, that look of “Oh my gosh, this aisle is so overwhelming! Why are there so many options?!!”

She looks at me, gives me the one over & says, “You aren’t a mother by any chance are you?”

I wanted to laugh out loud & reply, “Seriously, what gave it away?!”

Was it the hair that hasn’t been brushed since my kid’s naptime because I accidentally fell asleep with him while begging trying to get him to sleep? Was it the big, chocolate pudding stain that was smeared across my shoulder because Lboy bit his tongue while eating a snack after his nap & I completely forgot to change while rushing out of the house to get my grocery trip over? Was it the holes in the knees of my jeans because I’ve not bought myself a new pair of pants in almost 2 years & I’ve completely worn them out? The bags under the eyes? The mom shoes?

No, no, it must be the 2 boxes of pull-ups, the stack of wet wipes & the baby shampoo that I am trying to balance in my arms while trying to get something else that shouts “I have a kid!” off the shelf.

Please, do tell! What told you I was a mom?!

I promise I didn’t go into all of that with her, because I knew that she wouldn’t get why it was so funny. But, I was cracking myself up for sure!

She had a baby shower to go to, but had no idea what kind of diaper to buy. I showed her my favorite new born diapers, gave her my advice about how many to buy & what size, then we went our separate ways, her with a huge look of relief at being able to leave that scary, scary aisle & me laughing at just how hysterical I looked.

One thing is for sure, I definitely looked like your stereotypical mom!

This made me laugh, Kate! I’m afraid there’s no mistaking my mommy status most days, either. 🙂 So glad to have you and your sense of humor back in the blogosphere!

Ha! I’ve seen that look before. They give you the pleading sideways eye glance… they know you’re a mom because you’re haggard, unkempt and just plain hot mess-ish… they want you to help them wade through the 587 products on the baby registry…
I saw a lady with a baby registry and a handful of sleepers. I knew she wasn’t a mom and I REALLY knew the registrant wasn’t yet a mom because all of the sleepers had SNAPS. I walked over to her and said, “Put those things down. Trust me. I know she registered for them but I assure you she doesn’t know better. Get those other there, with the zipper.” LOL

That’s definitely true! I quit using all those snaps around day 1 because they were so complicated!

Glad to see you back! And yes we all have that “I’m a mom look” now. Must be something that takes place once you spit the kid out LOL!

So glad to see ya back! Your tale of this had me nearly in hysterics! Why? It’s funny of course! At one time or other we’ve all gone to the store looking the Mom part and not even thinking twice about it. What had me cracking up was the mental image of the stuff you were balancing. Cause, which of us Moms hasn’t run to an aisle just to grab this or that, then meet back up with the person with the cart.

Ya know, that diaper aisle isn’t even the scariest aisle at the grocery store. If you have kids with you the worse aisle by far is the cereal aisle. I’ll allow that in the beginning the diaper aisle is daunting.

Lol! True! I’ve been making sure that I spend more time buying fun clothes, especially for pregnancy. I don’t want to be a frumpy pregnant lady! haha

I have so been there. Just like non-mommies can spot us from a mile away – it goes both ways. That glazed over look in their eyes give them away. Come to think of it, I’ve been on both sides of that situation! LOL

I remember how overwhelmed I used to be in that aisle. There are so many options and products to choose from.
Poor woman didn’t stand a chance.

No she really didn’t. I just remember avoiding that aisle at all costs pre-kids!
